    Mining structured Petri nets for the visualization of process behavior

    Visualization is essential for understanding the models obtained by process mining. Clear and efficient visual representations make the embedded information more accessible and analyzable. This work presents a novel approach for generating process models with structural properties that induce visually friendly layouts. Rather than generating a single model that captures all behaviors, a set of Petri net models is delivered, each one covering a subset of traces of the log. The models are mined by extracting slices of labelled transition systems with specific properties from the complete state space produced by the process logs. In most cases, few Petri nets are sufficient to cover a significant part of the behavior produced by the log.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    A systematic review of Twitter’s hashtags in public health: an example of a globally adopted standard

    The objective is to find evidence and make recommendations on the use of Twitter in public health,particularly through the study of hashtags(#). This systematic review shows the use of Twitter in different areas of public health: epidemiological surveillance, health promotion, health protection and disease prevention. Articles on this subject published in indexed journals with impact factor show the importance of conversations to engage the attention of Twitter users by using citations (@ user) and retweets(RT); however, not much importance seems to be given to the use of hashtags(#), which are often assimilated to the concept of keywords. Although tracking recurring hashtagsshould be less expensive than computing Twitter content, the potential of hashtaggeddata has not been properly exploited or recognized over the past years, probably due to the lack of efficient tools

    Schroedinger vs. Navier-Stokes

    [EN] Quantum mechanics has been argued to be a coarse-graining of some underlying deterministic theory. Here we support this view by establishing a map between certain solutions of the Schroedinger equation, and the corresponding solutions of the irrotational Navier-Stokes equation for viscous fluid flow. As a physical model for the fluid itself we propose the quantum probability fluid. It turns out that the (state-dependent) viscosity of this fluid is proportional to Planck's constant, while the volume density of entropy is proportional to Boltzmann's constant. Stationary states have zero viscosity and a vanishing time rate of entropy density. On the other hand, the nonzero viscosity of nonstationary states provides an information-loss mechanism whereby a deterministic theory (a classical fluid governed by the Navier-Stokes equation) gives rise to an emergent theory (a quantum particle governed by the Schroedinger equation).Fernández De Córdoba, P.; Isidro San Juan, JM.; Vazquez Molina, J.     [EN] The classical thermostatics of equilibrium processes is shown to possess a quantum mechanical dual theory with a finite dimensional Hilbert space of quantum states. Specifically, the kernel of a certain Hamiltonian operator becomes the Hilbert space of quasistatic quantum mechanics.     Experiencia y resultados preliminares en el uso de cilindros intersomáticos para la artrodesis lumbar

    El dolor lumbar crónico es una patología que puede llegar a ser incapacitante y en la que a menudo fracasan los tratamientos conservadores. Como alternativa entre las cirugías que pretenden atajar este problema mediante una artrodesis está la fusión intersomática con cilindros, que presenta algunas ventajas respecto a otras técnicas de fijación. Esta técnica ha sido introducida recientemente en nuestro país. Se presentan los primeros resultados obtenidos tras esta cirugía en los primeros 16 pacientes operados. Desde 1997 a diciembre de 2000 se han implantado 11 cilindros BAK y 5 LIFEC. Diez pacientes tenían un seguimiento mínimo de 1 año y éstos constituyen la serie evaluada. Siete pacientes (70%) no presentaban dolor. Cuatro pacientes (40%) se habían incorporado a sus trabajos respectivos. Seis pacientes (60%) no precisaban tratamiento médico. Los buenos resultados obtenidos hasta el momento nos invitan a pensar que esta técnica, de menor agresividad y que no cierra la puerta a otros tipos de instrumentación, es una opción válida para el tratamiento del dolor lumbar crónico.Chronic low back pain is a medical cause of disability in which conservative management is often not effective. As an alternative, interbody fusion with cylinders offers several advantages as compared to other surgical methods of fusion. This technique has been recently introduced in our Country. The preliminary results of 16 patients managed in our Department are shown. From 1997 to December 2000, eleven BAK devices and 5 LIFEC have been implanted. Ten patients had a minimum follow-up of 1 year and these constitute the series evaluated. Seven patients (70%) were free of pain. Four patients (40%) returned to their previous job. Six patients (60%) did not need medical treatment. The good results with this technique encourage us and suggest that these devices are a valid option for the management of chronic low back pain

    Los pacientes afectados de artrosis unicompartimetal de rodilla pueden ser tratados con diferentes métodos quirúrgicos. Los más habituales son la osteonomía tibial en jóvenes y la prótesis total de rodilla en ancianos. Una alternativa que va adquiriendo adeptos es la prótesis unicondílea. Tras un período inicial de gran euforia se pasó a otro de escepticismo, dando los resultados. El propósito del presente estudio es evaluar un nuevo diseño de prótesis de rodilla unicondílea (Alpina, IQL) a corto plazo siguiendo criterios clínicos y de calidad de vida. Se revisan 13 pacientes intervenidos entre Junio de 2000 a Marzo del 2002. Siete eran varones y seis mujeres. La edad media fue de 65 años (r=55-72ª). En doce casos la etiología fue artrosis y en uno necrosis del cóndilo interno. La evaluación clínica se realizó mediante el cuestionario sobre la calidad de vida SF-12. Todos los pacientes consiguieron una flexión de 110º y extensión completa. Sólo un paciente presentó molestias leves.Patients who have unicompartimental knee osteoarthritis can be manager by different surgical techniques. Young people are usually treated by tibial osteotomy and elderly people by total knee replacement. Unicondylar knee prosthesis is becoming an attractive recognized alternative. After a period of enthusiastic regarding this technique, scepticism took place based on the clinical results. The aim of this study is to evaluate, in firs instance, a new knee unicondylar knee prosthesis design (Alpine, IQL) following clinical criteria and quality of life. Thirteen patients, managed in between June 2000 and March 2002, are reviewed. Seven were males and six females. The mean age was 65 years (range 55-77 years). Osteoarthritis was the aetiology in twelve cases and necrosis of the medial condyle in one patient. The clinical evaluation was based on quality of life through a questionnaire SF-12. All patients improved a knee flexion of 110º and a complete extension. Only one patient had slight pain and had some limitation

    Adenovirus core protein V reinforces the capsid and enhances genome release from disrupted particles

    Out of the three core proteins in human adenovirus, protein V is believed to connect the inner capsid surface to the outer genome layer. Here, we explored mechanical properties and in vitro disassembly of particles lacking protein V (Ad5-ΔV). Ad5-ΔV particles were softer and less brittle than the wild-type ones (Ad5-wt), but they were more prone to release pentons under mechanical fatigue. In Ad5-ΔV, core components did not readily diffuse out of partially disrupted capsids, and the core appeared more condensed than in Ad5-wt. These observations suggest that instead of condensing the genome, protein V antagonizes the condensing action of the other core proteins. Protein V provides mechanical reinforcement and facilitates genome release by keeping DNA connected to capsid fragments that detach during disruption. This scenario is in line with the location of protein V in the virion and its role in Ad5 cell entry

    Percentile Study of chi Distribution. Application to Response Time Data.

    As a continuation of our previous work, where a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution was found to model a collective's reaction times, in this work we will carry out a percentile study of the χ distribution for some freedom ranging from k = 2 to k = 10. The most commonly used percentiles in the biomedical and behavioral sciences have been included in the analysis. We seek to provide a look-up table with percentile ratios, taken symmetrically about the median, such that this distribution can be identified in practice in an easy way. We have proven that these ratios do not depend upon the variance chosen for the k generating Gaussians. In general, the χ probability density, generalized to take any value of the variance, represents an ideal gas in a k-dimensional space. We also derive an approximate expression for the median of the generalized χ distribution. In the second part of the results, we will focus on the practical case of k = 3, which represents the ideal gas in physics, and models quite well the reaction times of a human collective. Accurately, we will perform a more detailed scrutiny of the percentiles for the reaction time distribution of a sample of 50 school-aged children (7200 reaction times)

    Discovering duplicate tasks in transition systems for the simplification of process models

    This work presents a set of methods to improve the understandability of process models. Traditionally, simplification methods trade off quality metrics, such as fitness or precision. Conversely, the methods proposed in this paper produce simplified models while preserving or even increasing fidelity metrics. The first problem addressed in the paper is the discovery of duplicate tasks. A new method is proposed that avoids overfitting by working on the transition system generated by the log. The method is able to discover duplicate tasks even in the presence of concurrency and choice. The second problem is the structural simplification of the model by identifying optional and repetitive tasks. The tasks are substituted by annotated events that allow the removal of silent tasks and reduce the complexity of the model. An important feature of the methods proposed in this paper is that they are independent from the actual miner used for process discovery.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
